There are many reasons why the washer stops spinning. Some common ones connected with not sufficiently drained water from the tub, which very often related to a failed or clogged drain pump, clogged washer, failed water pressure switch, control boards, failed wash motor, failed sensors and many more depending on your brand and model.

Dryers have several moving parts that wear out with time. If you run frequent and heavy loads the life of these parts is reduced and deterioration occurs in a matter of a few years. The first and most common parts are the drum rollers with shafts, motor idler assy with pulleys, electric motors, drum bearings, blower wheels and in very rare cases drive belts. If you record the sound on your phone it will less likely to help us to diagnose it over the phone as the sound is not going to point where it is coming from. 

It is very common that a broken drive belt could be a reason why the drum stops rotating. If the belt was old it most likely could break due to its wear and tear.  In some cases a failed motor idler assy with pulley also could damage the belt. Failed control boards or thermal fuses will prevent a motor from getting enough power to run the load. In some brands like Frigidaire worn drum bearings may seize the drum from rotation. Obviously the failed motors are also in the list of the parts to test in the diagnostic process. These are more obvious reasons related to many different brands and models but not all, that is certain cases might be very unique.
